Sunbather is the second studio album by the American metal band Deafheaven. After the release of their debut record Roads to Judah, the then two piece group consisting of George Clarke and Kerry McCoy began work on Sunbather under the label Deathwish and recorded in several days in January 2013. The recording process brought a third member into the fold with drummer Dan Tracy who would go on to become a permanent fixture of the band.
DEAFHEAVEN Sunbather Label: Deathwish Inc. Release Date: June 11 2013. Deafheaven began writing new material for a follow-up to its April 2011 debut album Roads to Judah by September 2011. At the time, the new material was originally described as being "faster, darker, a lot heavier and far more experimental" than Roads to Judah, but as the new songs developed over time, vocalist George Clarke clarified that some of the material was darker and more aggressive, while other parts were far brighter, more melodic and pop-influenced. Clarke said the goal of Sunbather was to expand Deafheaven's sound and express a "full spectrum of emotion.

Deafheaven's second album is an epic mix of intense black metal and chiming post-rock, the sort of sound that inspires the wide-screen feelings people look for in Sigur Rós, Mogwai, or Godspeed You! Black Emperor. But that gorgeous 12-minute set-piece established the template and scope for the band's excellent sophomore album, Sunbather, a record that finds Deafheaven living up to and then surpassing expectations. Basically, they've learned how to take the sounds they've dreamed up out of their heads so we can hear them, too. If you go back and listen to Roads, you'll find the elements that appear on Sunbather with 10 times the intensity.
Produced by Deafheaven & Jack Shirley. I held my breath and drove through a maze of wealthy homes And I watched how green the trees were And I watched how green the trees were And I watched the steep walkways and the white fences. I gripped the wheel I gripped the wheel I gripped the wheel I gripped the wheel.
You can spend hours dismantling Sunbather and cooking up a neat sub-sub-genre for it (atever). Or you can just call it one of the year’s best records.

Band Name Deafheaven. Album Name Sunbather. Дата релиза 11 Июнь 2013. Yet whilst Deafheaven are no doubt capable of creating long, beautiful and emotional post rock inspired pieces, I hardly see them making a serious mark in the black metal scene. Simply for the fact that they are not a black metal band, I hate to break it to their supports but nothing about Sunbather has much to do with what black metal is typically associated with. Instead, Sunbather seems to focus on a similar wavelength to Envy’s Insomniac Doze rather than anything black metal related.
