Moonsorrow is a Finnish pagan metal band formed in Helsinki in 1995. Musically, the band incorporates elements of black metal and folk metal in their sound. The band call their sound "epic heathen metal" and try to distance themselves from the term "Viking metal". They have distanced themselves from other folk metal bands, emphasising that their music is pagan and spiritual and is challenging for its listeners, rather than happy or danceable

Between 1996 and 2001 Moonsorrow released 4 demos and an album before signing with Spinefarm. The 2nd album, Voimasta ja kunniasta was released in 2001 and its follow-up Kivenkantaja (2003) already hit the Finnish album charts at It also took the band to their first shows abroad in 2004. Verisäkeet (2005) reached the charts as well, and saw Moonsorrow play their 1st show on the other side of the Atlantic and join Primordial for the band’s 1st full European tour, both in 2006.

When hearing a name like Moonsorrow, one doesn’t expect to hear the grandiose heroism and pagan folksy tunes that wove their way into the band’s middle era material. But a promising demo with bleak yet epic musical backdrop that definitely takes cues from For All Tid and In The Nightside Eclipse is a much more predictable outcome, as it is indicative of a band that has a compound name that is all but right out of the unwritten 2nd wave codex.

Metsä (Forest) is the first officially released demo cassette by finnish folk metal band Moonsorrow in 1997. Originally 215 copies of the demo were released , all of which were sold out. In 2001 the demo got remastered by Marko Tarvonen and was provided as download.
