German-born pianist Jutta Hipp (1925-2003) was enticed to travel to New York in 1955 by jazz writer/historian Leonard Feather. She was signed by Alfred Lion to Blue Note Records where she very quickly-within an eight month period-recorded three albums for the label: At the Hickory House, Vol. 1 (1955); At the Hickory House, Vol. 2, and Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims, a teaming with the tenor saxophonist which was her most successful album. The potential is revealed in Lost Tapes: The German Recordings 1952-1955. This is the sound that enchanted Leonard Feather, and convinced Alfred Lion that Blue Note Records had a spot on its roster for Jutta Hipp. The set opens with Hipp working the piano trio format with a deeply blue "Blues After Hours," followed by Erroll Garner's "Erroll's Bounce.

If you are an aficionado of piano jazz of the Brubeck era, the release of the Julia Hipp album "German Recordings 1952-1955 - Lost Tapes" by Jazzhaus will come as a complete surprise, and make you wonder why the name of this artist is unfamiliar. The fact that the album was recorded in Germany might be a clue, but the years of the original recordings listed, and the name "Lost Tapes" (as these pieces are seeing a first release some 61 years later) is a better reason and adds to the mystery

With Jutta Hipp, there is evidence in these European recordings that she was original. While she was definitely influenced by American musicians, the style she developed in Germany was unique to her, and, in my limited experience, most German jazz pianists from the ‘50s. On several later cuts, her solos mix a Baroque counterpoint with jazz harmonies, switching between straight playing and swing playing regularly. American basketball systems change from coach to coach and team to team. Players that flourish in one system, will whither in another. After a few years in America, Jutta Hipp gave up on music and earned a living as a seamstress. In a new land, with new sounds and no close friends to support her, she returned to her first love, painting, to fulfill her need to create. It’s a mystery why she didn’t return to Germany, to her roots and a stronger base for support.
