On Starflowers, singer Sinikka Langeland (who is Norwegian and Finnish) presents a set of contemplative adaptations of poems by the twentieth-century Norwegian writer Hans Borli. Langeland possesses a lovely voice that recalls the great British folk-rock singer Sandy Denny and she also plays the kantele, a traditional Finnish harp. Songs slowly blossom through subtle, expansive improvisation. What’s most striking about this excellent album is the way different tendencies work together: Borli’s timeless ruminations and the sleek modern production; free-floating atmospheres and precise instrumental details; traditionalism and experimentation. The psych-flavored Treet som vekser opp-ned evokes the late German chanteuse Nico and also has horns playing folkish lines in tandem. Langt innpa skoga finds Seim displaying a Middle Eastern influence that fits in nicely with its surroundings.

Starflowers is the fascinating debut recording from Norwegian vocalist and kantele player Sinikka Langeland. The album is a brilliant confluence of folk music, sung poetry and Nordic improvisation. A folk singer from Finnskogen, Norway's & forest' land, Langeland explores in her work the relationship between man and nature. All of the texts on the album are derived from the poetry of Hans Børli (1918-89), a lumberjack whose poetry is alive with his experiences of the Norwegian forests.
