The final track of MGMT’s second album Congratulations returns to the jangling ‘60s pop stylings of Waterloo Sunset. It’s smooth and charming and sidesteps the awkward hooks of the rest of the album. But it’s Congratulations' lyrics here that are most important. As Andy VanWyngarden sings that all he wants are your congratulations, he reveals the whole point of the album. MGMT don’t need – or necessarily want – a big selling album. They want recognition and credibility. And they deserve them.

Congratulations still bursts with colour, but the antic edges have been sanded down-well, save for the garage-rock freak-out of Brian Eno, a hyperactive tribute to the ambient icon. It’s Working crisply revamps Phil Spector’s wall of sound; Song for Dan Treacy plays nimble cat-and-mouse with ‘60s organ and falsetto vocals. Congratulations wraps up with a wry take on the perils of stardom-the spiritual flip side to their debut’s fanciful Time to Pretend.
