The earlier date includes pianist John Malachi (who also worked with singers like Dinah Washington, Billy Eckstine, and Al Hibbler, plus bassist Joe Benjamin and drummer Roy Haynes

Sarah Vaughan had one of those voices that you just want to hear all day long. She could go deep to female baritone levels and high up to soprano. Vaughan is supported by a trio (Jimmy Jones, piano, Richard Davis, bass, Roy Haynes, drums) on this intimate 1957 live set At Mister Kelly’s, recorded at a jazz club in Chicago. She smolders on mid-tempo numbers and ballads. She laughs with the audience as the musicians work out the key on Willow Weep For Me then she improvises lines toward the end after someone knocks something over.

And although Vaughan asks for her mic to be turned up throughout the performance, she is mixed up front and quite high in the recording-right where she deserves to be. - -S. Duda. I view the outcome as demonstrative of her top notch musicianship. The very talented trio (Jimmy Jones - piano, Richard Davis - bass, Roy Haynes - drums) is a real asset to Sarah as is she to them. They play well together. Enjoy them in this quality live recording. Extraordinary live album. Wish I was around when Mr. Kelly's was hopping and jazz and scat singing was new music.
