The second Nine Inch Nails EP of original material following Broken (1992), it marks longtime collaborator Atticus Ross's first appearance as an official member of the band.

Nine Inch Nails’ surprise-release new EP Not the Actual Events is slight, but at moments it delivers the kind of visceral fury that NIN hasn’t recreated since its mid-’90s Downward Spiral heyday. It’s the least essential non-instrumental album the band has released. But with the subsequent announcement that two major events for NIN in 2017 are now also promised, perhaps Reznor himself knows this already, and it will turn out that that this slight record was in fact, not the actual event.

TITLE added to MP3 cart. Not The Actual Events. Those who didn't care for that album can rest assured NIN will continue to go in different, unexpected directions, which has always been its greatest strength. As far as I am aware it's a limited-time physical release only, and I've only seen it on the NIN store.

A decade ago Nine Inch Nails unleashed fifth album ‘Year Zero’ on their baying audience. Marking the last time Trent Reznor’s project had created an album as a cohesive entity, rather than the free-for-the-fans playground of ‘The Slip’, instrumentals ‘Ghosts I-IV’, or the impeccably curated career-revisiting of ‘Hesitation Marks’. Year Zero’ was a concept album, set in 2022, surrounding an increasingly militarised police-state of future America, blighted by terrorism with its populace subjected to invasive surveillance and inescapable brainwashing.

It has been pressed on a single sided 180 gram vinyl. Made to be played loud. Originally meant for release in December 2016, which is also the date printed on the hype sticker. Printed inner sleeve with lyrics is included however the vinyl is in a separate plain white poly lined sleeve from the factory

The surprise release of Not the Actual Events accompanies an anticlimactic expansion of Trent Reznor’s one-man empire to include composer Atticus Ross, with whom he’s collaborated on numerous film scores and standard musical releases over the past decade.

The EP finds Reznor and now official bandmate Atticus Ross taking an unexpected left turn from 2013’s Hesitation Marks and sounding unrecognizable from their current film work. It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make says Reznor  .

Nine Inch Nails will release a new EP, 'Not the Actual Events,' before the year is up. They have also announced a reworking of 'The Fragile. It contains 37 instrumental, alternate and unreleased songs, many of which reportedly have never been released elsewhere. The Fragile occupies a very interesting and intimate place in my heart, Reznor said in a statement.

With the exception of Year Zero Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails’ music have never been particularly political. He built NIN’s reputation on personal and emotional disconnection. Looking at that landscape, what does Reznor have to be upset about at the moment? Dude has his monster NIN catalog, an award-winning niche for soundtrack work, by all appearances a solid family life and significant distance from his old vices and demons, and a cushy deal with Apple Music. Indeed, this EP as a whole has a flailing, catch-as-catch-can quality matched only by the Broken EP. Reznor himself describes Not the Actual Events as unfriendly, fairly impenetrable. That knottiness frustrates me as much as the heavy-metal left turn of Broken did in 1992. In all fairness, each cut on Not the Actual Events might work in a different context.
