They probably didn't even remember that they'd left the tape machine on. Seriously, it's the kind of thing that gives bootlegging a bad name - but hey, Stooges fans should be used to that by now!
Death Trip was pure aural excess, its stop-start riff rolling on and on, seemingly endlessly, Iggy screaming at earbleed level and duelling Williamson for space in the dense mix (especially so on Iggy’s controversial 1997 remix of the album, which turned the volume up at the expense of any subtlety; to these ears at least, the brutishness of this mix suits. these songs particularly well), as he barks that he’s on a death trip, and tells of a twisted and sick love affair, where his lover is his enemy, where cruelty is erotic, and where a bite is sweeter than a kiss.

The Stooges' fifth album Ready to Die avoids the pitfalls of 2007's disastrous reunion album The Weirdness, but 40 years removed from the kamikaze death-trip fantasies of Raw Power, it's the sound of Iggy admitting, I’m too old for this shit. We could’ve been the American Stones, Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton told MOJO magazine back in 1996.
