Bush came to notice in 1978 when, aged 19, she topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks with her debut single "Wuthering Heights", becoming the first female artist to achieve a UK number one with a self-written song.

In March 2014, Bush announced plans to perform 15 shows in London in August and September that year. The shows sold out so quickly that a further seven were immediately added, with all shows selling out in 15 minutes. Before the Dawn was recorded during that run of 22 sold-out shows at the Hammersmith Apollo.
