Pattern/Shadow For the Dodos "the best time to make a record is right after you've finished one" says vocalist and guitarist Meric Long  . And for the Dodos, their natural inclination is to create music that sounds positively epic. As the album closes with "Pattern/Shadow" (a track that features vocals from Thee Oh Sees' Brigid Dawson), Long sings "Your sha.

The Dodos began playing music together in 2005, when musician Meric Long, who had been gigging steadily in San Francisco as a solo singer-songwriter, was introduced to Logan Kroeber through a mutual friend (a college acquaintance of Long's that happened to be Kroeber's cousin). The Dodos are a band of two, clean-cut halves. One of the duo was a student of West African Ewe drumming and intricate Blues fingerpicking guitar, the other hails from a background in heavy metal bands. Their most recent album ‘Individ’ can be seen as a resolution of this duality, combining their old acoustic sensibilities with an expansive vision and sound, and this performance served as further proof. Long self-released a solo EP titled Dodo Bird in March 2006, in which Long played all the instruments.

Individ plays like a companion piece to the band's 2008 breakthrough Visiter. The records they make together as the Dodos are generally characterized by a kind of symbiotic back and forth-a balance composed of virtuoso playing, alternately-tuned guitar sounds, and insanely intricate drum patterns. That they have managed to create a sound that is instantly and distinctly recognizable as their own (and amass a devoted following) is no small feat, but figuring out how to push their sound forward without repeating themselves or abandoning their aesthetic has proven to be much trickier business.

The Dodos turn 10 this year. The San Francisco indie rock duo met through mutual friends in San Francisco’s constant but widening music scene back in 2005. Meric Long was busy drafting lyric sheets and complex guitar parts, while Logan Kroeber was learning how to bring West African Ewe drumming into his rhythms. After a couple of stand-in shows and several jam sessions, the two realized they were more than just compatible - they challenged one another. The Dodos push through their inner turmoil by means of dizzying tempos and layered guitars, much of which recalls their early sound on Visiter. Thee Oh Sees’ Brigid Dawson steps in on closer Pattern Shadows to bring back that album’s feminine allure. The same acoustic guitar from that session comes back out, and its weird, dissonant tuning can be heard in the forefront of Goodbyes and Endings.
