His early recordings spanned a remarkable musical range, from funk-driven pop songs and New Orleans jazz and blues to at least a half-dozen other musical styles and influences. His career spanned nearly 60 years and underwent many different musical phases. But he is perhaps best known for his early recordings, which spanned a remarkable musical range, from funk-driven pop songs to New Orleans jazz and blues to at least a half-dozen other musical styles and influences, often creatively and seamlessly blended together. Born Malcolm Mac Rebennack Jr. on November 20, 1941, in New Orleans, he grew up in the working class 3rd Ward, the same neighborhood where jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong grew up four decades earlier. Johnny Cash, ‘Christmas With Johnny Cash’ (2003). Cash recorded Christmas albums throughout his career. In 2003, the year he died, Sony Legacy released this excellent collection of songs cut between 1962 and 1980. Crosby's 1945 album Merry Christmas – expanded over the years with tracks from throughout the Forties and Fifties and reissued on CD as White Christmas in 1986 – has a distinct Irish-Catholic flavor thanks to the hymn "Faith of Our Fathers" and the jaunty "Christmas in Killarney. There's also the Hawaiian-tinged "Mele Kalikimaka" (one of three songs where he makes hella merry with the Andrews Sisters). The early Beach Boys could turn National Podiatrist Recognition Day into a party, so you know they're gonna knock Christmas out of the park. Their smiles 'n' sweaters playfulness is all over this 1964 collection.

The 1960s also included the slyly political pop of Brazil’s Os Mutantes, the early electronic experiments of Silver Apples, and the free jazz exhalations of Albert Ayler. It was a single-oriented era-a startlingly inventive period following the initial explosion of rock’n’roll but before the album became dominant-when entire new genres seemed to bubble up every few months. It wasn’t really recorded at The Club -that was just a trick to get some publicity for a new venue on Chicago’s South Side. Instead, Adderley got some friends together in the studio and plied them with drinks while the band cut this bit of surging, euphoric gospel. Every whoop, though, is true and from the heart. Like the Righteous Brothers by way of the Free Design and Ennio Morricone, this was light years away from his current coordinates, but no less cinematic.
