Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter (Russian: Святосла́в Теофи́лович Ри́хтер, tr. Sviatosláv Teofílovich Ríkhter, IPA: ; March 20 1915 – August 1, 1997) was a Soviet pianist of Russian-German origin, who is generally regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. He is known for the "depth of his interpretations, his virtuoso technique, and his vast repertoire.

Sony Classical celebrates the art of Sviatoslav Richter, one of the 20th century s greatest pianists, with the first-ever release of his complete Columbia Masterworks and RCA Victor live and studio recordings, Sviatoslav Richter The Complete Album Collection, an 18-CD original jacket box set. Richter was already a legend in his native Soviet Union when he came to the West for the first time in 1960.

Sviatoslav Richter was born in Zhitomir but grew up in Odessa. Unusually, he was largely self-taught although his organist father provided him with a basic education in music. Even at an early age, Richter was an excellent sight-reader, and regularly practiced with local opera and ballet companies. He developed a lifelong passion for opera, vocal and chamber music that found its full expression in the festival he established in Grange de Meslay, France. He started to work at the Odessa Conservatory where he accompanied the opera rehearsals

LATE RECORDINGS: The 1960 Sviatoslav Richter was a far more fiery and risk-taking pianist than the mature Richter many of us have grown accustomed to. Tremendously exciting. As a bonus, the Sony box has two CDs of the mature Richter in concert at the 1988 Schleswig-Holstein Festival (previously released), plus some Schubert pieces recorded in concert at the Aldeburgh Festival.
