To the average secular humanist, Zoltan Kodaly's Missa Brevis can be a bewildering experience. It's an erratic expanse of music, ranging from deep-throated organ runs to angelic boys-choir arrangements-all over, one might say, God's green earth
Composed By – Zoltán Kodály. Choir – The Choir Of Westminster Cathedral. Chorus Master – James O'Donnell (2). Design – Terry Shannon (2). Engineer – Antony Howell, Julian Millard.

Works: Mass in E flat. Performer: Westminster Cathedral Choir/James O’Donnell; Andrew Reid (organ). Although Janácek used the two-and-a-half movements he had completed in the first version of the famous Glagolitic Mass 19 years later, little survived in the final form of the work. The sharp-eared will pick up resemblances between the two works in the ‘Et iterum’ of the Credo and also in the Sanctus which Wingfield has based on a first draft of the Glagolitic Mass.

In Kodaly's 'Missa Brevis' in particular, O'Donnell's slow tempi provide for an unforgettable experience especially in the mystical 'Kyrie' and gloriously moving 'Credo'. A certain palpable sense of pathos can be felt running throughout this Mass and I cannot think of it being done better, acoustically the recording is indeed superb in every department balancing organ and choral forces with remarkable dexterity.
