Their most recent offering, Nuclear Evolution: The Age of Love, lives up to its name by showcasing two discs worth of futuristic music. True to its title, the album displays an evolution from 2007’s The Hollywood Recordings. In fact, you can’t technically classify this as a Hip Hop album, since only one song ( Traffika ) contains actual, rapped bars. Taz, Shafiq and Om’Mas orchestrate the proceedings, providing a seamless blend of live instruments, samples and sequenced drums that is unmatched. The trio is equally comfortable playing the background and letting lesser-known but equally capable.
Opened with frisky bossa nova and closed with mellow interstellar jazz (featuring Gary Bartz's gorgeously singing alto sax), the album provides 70 minutes of 2009's most challenging, sonically adventurous music. Initial copies of the album came with a second disc containing tracks from the group's 2004 12" for Ubiquity, as well as their cover of Sly & the Family Stone's "Just Like a Baby," reprised from the label's Rewind! 4 compilation. Double Dutch (Co Co Pops)" comes from the most demented blacktop scene imaginable, while the ecstatic.

Outstanding, space-age production saves Sa-Ra's latest record from being dubbed another overly-sexual R&B; mess. And one would hope that same sound would transfer to Sa-Ra's latest, Nuclear Evolution: The Age of Love. Musically, the group continues breaking ground and solidifying itself as a powerhouse. Unfortunately, that only remains true in the sonic regions of the record, which are weighed down by mundane, in-your-face sexuality. The issue plaguing this record is actually one that rears its head frequently in the realm of modern R&B and soul. Gone are the days of subtlety where, yes, it was implied you were singing to a lady who you would hope to have breakfast with the next morning. Rob Laufer's first album in almost a decade proves worth the wait. Smart pop sensibilities abound as evidenced by his latest song "Space and Time".
