The Messa da Requiem is a musical setting of the Catholic funeral mass (Requiem) for four soloists, double choir and orchestra by Giuseppe Verdi. It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist whom Verdi admired. The first performance, at the San Marco church in Milan on 22 May 1874, marked the first anniversary of Manzoni's death. The work was at one time called the Manzoni Requiem

The story behind Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem (1874) starts with an ending-or many endings, that is. The piece's final segment, titled Libera Me (meaning "deliver me"), was initially composed in honour of Italian composer Gioacchin Rossini, following his death. At the time, Verdi had proposed to the burghers of Bologna a mass dedicated to the dead, written by the best among Italian composers. The project was rejected, but Verdi continued to write the composition on his own, also moved by the death of fellow composer and dear friend Alessandro Manzoni
