With Psychic Chasms, Palomo doesn't need to worry. Deadbeat Summer" and "Should Have Taken Acid With You" are two views of the same non-endless season- one mind-expandingly lazy and the other too lazy for mind expansion, both undeniably catchy, both earning doctorates in The Graduate school of coming-of-age ennui. After barely a half hour, the whole thing is over, but there's enough going on in the layered electronics and enigmatic longing to make this one of the year's most replayable albums.

Their debut Psychic Chasms actually lived up to the hype, which was no mean feat, especially because the band’s sound could be described as an improbable, hazy swirl of Daft Punk, My Bloody Valentine, and a vintage game console. Neon Indian’s watercolor electronic indie pop - which blurs disco, electro, dream and synth pop together effortlessly - is mostly the product of one Indian, Alan Palomo (the band’s other half, Alicia Scardetta, provides visuals for his lush sonics)

Why any of this should be used as criticism against Neon Indian is largely irrelevant. Psychic Chasms is simply an extremely well-constructed album that brings you back to that one summer where all you did was play Mario Kart, inhale things you and your friends shouldn’t have inhaled, and dream about that one cutie that was always just far enough away. Sure, Palomo is only 21 (meaning that he’s more of a 90’s baby than an 80’s one), but the memories he brings back are universal, and he even manages to do this under a multiple-layered, synthy, psychedelic soundscape.
