George Gershwin is an American legend and represents the first not-so-secret passageway between jazz and classical worlds. His songs and Porgy and Bess are clearly influenced by the jazz idiom but stand on the popular music side of the passageway. The Three Preludes for Piano, Rhapsody in Blue, and An American in Paris ARE the passageway, and this disc presents the latter two in performances by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on this splendid Telarc disc from 1981. Remove the piano from Rhapsody in Blue, and you have the essence of An American in Paris, composed just a few years after the Rhapsody. Once again, Gershwin, a superb songwriter, gave a fabulous melody orchestral life. This album is a perfect way to begin a small collection of Gershwin works. The performances are magnificent, and the non-remastered analogue sound is Telarc at its best.
