By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is a song written by Jimmy Webb. Originally recorded by Johnny Rivers in 1965, it was covered by American country music singer Glen Campbell on his album of the same name. Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) named it the third most performed song from 1940 to 1990
In March 1969 the album won the Grammy for Album of the Year (for 1968), the first country album to do so. In February 1968 the album's lead single "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", released October 1967, won Grammys for both Best Vocal Performance, Male and Best Contemporary Male Solo Vocal Performance (for 1967).
Like the other songs on the album, it was recorded in one take. Hayes explained to Rolling Stone magazine: "You know, I don't plan it, I just rap, man. Cause if you go over it too many times it just gets mechanical. Hayes explained to National Public Radio: "The rap came out of the necessity to communicate. There's a local club in Memphis, primarily black, called The Tiki Club. One day there I heard this song by Glen Campbell - 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix. I thought, 'Wow, this song is great, this man must really love this woman. Carol from Nashville, TnLast night (9/24/09) my husband and I heard Glen Campbell sing "By the Time I get to Phoenix", live, with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and accompanied by the song's writer Jimmy Webb. It doesn't get any better than that! I used to think of this song as sad, especially because the couple was evidently still in love with each other.

By the time I make Albuquerque She'll be working She'll probably stop at lunch, And give me a call But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringing Off the wall, that's all. By the time I make Oklahoma She'll be sleeping She'll turn softly and call my name out low And she'll cry, just to think, I'd really leave her Though time and time I've tried to tell her so She just didn't know, I would really g. reDiscover By The Time I Get To Phoenix. The Very Very Best Of Crowded House’ Set For Long-Awaited Vinyl Debut. When he released By The Time I Get To Phoenix in November 1967, Glen Campbell was not only on the seventh album of his career. For all that he’d already been on the chart scene, intermittently, for six years, Campbell was ending the year as one of the hottest new properties in country music, and that status was confirmed not only in a smash hit single with Jimmy Webb’s title song, but also when the album won the 1968 Grammy for Album of the Year - the.
Glen Campbell's commercial breakthrough came by way of the title track, which was the direct precursor in production terms to "Wichita Lineman," and by the same writer. The cover of Paul Simon's "Homeward Bound" is sincere if a little perfunctory, but Campbell's rendition of Ernest Tubb's "Tomorrow Never Comes" is a bravura performance, rich and soulful, as well as recalling Rodgers & Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone" as done by Gerry & the Pacemakers. The final number here, the touching "Love Is a Lonesome River," makes a brilliant coda.
