He’s always seemed uninterested in making his creative impulses fit in any kind of box, so his records tend to range from relatively straightforward, pop-compatible stuff into more abstract territory hovering in an ambiguous space between funk, electro, and experimental electronic music. Invite the Light is the first proper Dam-Funk album since 2009’s five-LP marathon Toeachizown, though Dam hasn’t exactly been silent all these years; it also follows projects like his 2013 album with his idol Steve Arrington, Higher, and 7 Days of Funk’s self-titled debut. Still, things never derail for long, and Invite the Light always stays within the Dam-Funk sound. He’s adaptable enough that it hardly matters whether he gravitates more toward pop or more toward experimentation - things will probably work out either way. Like Toeachizown before it, Invite the Light is a 360-degree view of his musical erudition, along with that boosted approachability.

While Dâm-Funk hasn’t released a proper full-length solo follow-up to 2009’s Toeachizown, he has been active in recent years. In addition to his 7 Days of Funk with Snoop Dogg (or Snoopzilla, as the rapper is called on the album) and the early demoes collection Adolescent Funk, Riddick has also dropped a series of EPs: 2010’s Hood Pass Intact, 2011’s InnaFocusedDaze, 2012’s I Don’t Wanna Be a Star! and his Invite the Light predecessor STFU EP. He also collaborated with Slave’s Steve Arrington and worked with Nite Jewel on their Nite Funk side project
