Bizet's suite contains several folk-like themes for the music but also incorporated three existing tunes from a folk-music collection published by Vidal of Aix in 1864: La Marcho di Rei (The March of the Kings), the Danse dei Chivau-Frus, and Er dou Guet. The score achieves powerful dramatic ends with the most economic of means. Now known as L'Arlésienne Suite No. 1, the suite used a full symphony orchestra but without the chorus. The first performance was at a Pasdeloup concert on 10 November 1872. There are at least two recordings of the complete incidental music for the play, one conducted by Albert Wolff and another by Michel Plasson (who has also recorded both suites).

Bizet: L'Arlesienne; Carmen. Marc Minkowski's partnership with the Naïve label has got off to a rousing start with this magnificent Bizet album. When faced with performances as utterly persuasive as this, it does get one hankering yet again for more first-class Bizet works than we actually have, but grateful that we do at least have these and the few others. The whole album is a real treat. These frequently recorded Bizet works (L'Arlesienne suites and incidental music, and Carmen suite) receive a very refreshing expression in this new recording by Marc Minkowski and his Louvre musicians. French music is unique and is best performed by the French. In these recordings the band captures the feeling of the music like none other that I have heard.

Shortly before Deutsche Grammophon issued this 2007 coupling of Claudio Abbado and the London Symphony Orchestra's 1977 recording of both L'Arlésienne Suites together with their 1980 recording of the Carmen Suite, it issued a coupling of Abbado's 1977 L'Arlésienne Suites but with Jean Martinon and the Orchestre National de l'ORTF recording Bizet's Jeux d'enfants and Symphony.
