The Carmen Suites are two suites of orchestral music drawn from the music of Georges Bizet's 1875 opera Carmen and compiled posthumously by his friend Ernest Guiraud. They adhere very closely to Bizet's orchestration. Guiraud also wrote the recitatives for Carmen, and compiled the second of the two suites from Bizet's L'Arlésienne incidental music. Each of the Carmen Suites contains six numbers. Both suites have been performed and recorded many times. Prélude – Act I, prelude (fate motive).

Bizet was schooled at the mid-19th century Paris Conservatory of Music, then a hotbed of Romantic composers famous, and soon to be. When he finished the score of Carmen he wrote a friend, I have written a work that is all clarity and vivacity, full of color and melody. And, I believe it was one of his peers at the Conservatory – sorry, can’t find the exact quote – who declared that French music must be characterized by clarity. These frequently recorded Bizet works (L'Arlesienne suites and incidental music, and Carmen suite) receive a very refreshing expression in this new recording by Marc Minkowski and his Louvre musicians. French music is unique and is best performed by the French. In these recordings the band captures the feeling of the music like none other that I have heard.
L'Arlesienne is an incidental music composed by Geroges Bizet for Alphonse Daudet's play of the same name. Created in 1872 in Paris, Bizet composed the same year an orchestral suite with 4 movements, as a small symphony. In 1879, Ernest Guiraud arranged a second suite. 4 mouvements, 4 movements : - I. Prélude, Allegro deciso (la Marche des Rois, the March of the Kings) - II. Minuet, Allegro giocoso - III. Adagietto - IV. Carillon, Allegro moderato.

On this disc, Abbado and the LSO sound light, witty, warm, colorful, and deep beneath the skin of the music, making the L'Arlésienne Suites ring all the changes from its swaggering March to its sultry Minuet and from its ardent Pastorale to its tragic Farandole, and the Carmen Suite sing, stamp, soar, and sizzle like Dorothy Dandridge in a flowing red skirt. Here, DG's late stereo sound is crisp, clean, deep, and vibrant. Here, in short, is a soupçon of Bizet for all ages, sexes, and tastes that only the hardest of critical hearts could not embrace with open arms.
