The Loom of Time primarily finds their footing in doom, riding mid-paced tempos with a hard rock groove a la Cathedral. The death metal element of NihilReich is fairly subdued, relegated large to the chunky, driving down-tuned rhythm guitar work, but TLoT’s blackened and melodic leanings are what really lend them a unique identity. Plodding doom rhythms can be blown away at any moment by barrages of blastbeats and melodic tremolo runs that smack of Dissection, or can be elevated by soaring lead guitar harmonies that expose their reverence for Iron Maiden. While NihilReich is a mostly engaging record, it, unfortunately, succumbs to debut album syndrome in regards to songwriting. I challenge you to find a single riff or melody on this record that is returned to even once after the band moves on from it. You won’t find one. This ambitious approach to TLoT’s constructions leaves me conflicted.

Band: The Loom of Time. Wow, what an incredibl. eir. ecord. Aussie doomsters have some interesting interpretations of two relatively secure genres-being black metal and doom metal-yet they throw in some hyper-melodic metal into the mix alongside modern metalcore type riffs and breakdowns. The whole album follows this template. Sometimes the recipe is amended with a little more metal here, a little more core there and there and there and there and you get the picture. The second track, The Pinnacle of Hypocrisy, treads the same path as the first song, albeit the black metal riff lasts for about twenty seconds this time around. After the initial listen, I just had to skip the last half of the song.

NihilReich is the eye-opening debut album of an Australian trio named The Loom of Time. The music is a creative and compelling integration of diverse elements, with black metal and melodic death metal as perhaps the dominant forms but with abundant progressive instrumental flourishes and detours into the hallowed halls of classic heavy metal and doom. This next album has some personal significance that goes beyond the excellence of the music, not just for me but for a lot of other people both in Seattle and elsewhere who knew Adrian Guerra. People who didn’t know him may still recognize the name - he was the drummer and co-vocalist in the Seattle funeral doom band Bell Witch.
