Complete your Galt MacDermot's First Natural Hair Band collection. It is really odd that this record is a sort of "lost" Galt MacDermot album. It has a few killer cuts (Ripped open, walking in space) and fits in perfectly with the sound he is known for. One wonders if it will ever see a reissue like most of his other albums? It deserves it.

Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical is a rock musical with a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. A product of the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the late 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement.

Features the classic cut "Ripped Open By Metal Explosions" & the renowned drummer Idris Muhammad on drums/precussions. I had been looking for this record for years, and thanks to SPIRAL here it is, but unfortunately, just like with every "Hair" record, it lacks that certain PUNCH that it's most famous cut so predominately displays. Still a great album though.

Arthur Terence Galt MacDermot (December 18, 1928 – December 17, 2018) was a Canadian-American composer, pianist and writer of musical theatre. He won a Grammy Award for the song "African Waltz" in 1960. His most successful musicals were Hair (1967; its cast album also won a Grammy) and Two Gentlemen of Verona (1971). MacDermot also composed music for film soundtracks, jazz and funk albums, and classical music, and his music has been sampled in hit hip-hop songs and albums

When I first met him, and indeed for many years after, I had no vantage point for the landscape that unfolds around that level of musical success.
