Claude Vivier (1948-83) died tragically young, when he was just beginning to find ways of bringing together his various musical and philosophical concerns. All four works stem from Vivier’s obsession with exploring outer and inner space, and it is Prologue pour un Marco Polo which offers the most fully realized expression of his personal style. It’s an absorbing ritual, in which ancient and modern elements confront one another to powerfully dramatic effect, and the performance, like all the readings on this well-recorded disc, gives every impression of an authentic fervour and precision.
