Original Broadway cast album is still the clear winner. I bought this 1963 recording to savor Regina Resnik's take-no-prisoners performance. Kenneth McKellar's securely sung and acted Caliph is easier on the ears than Richard Kiley's effortful high notes, though both offer lessons in committed acting. Adele Leigh's Marsina is a match for Doretta Morrow. From there every component is a notch or 2 below the Broadway cast. Montovani's orchestra is a suave accompanist rather than the compelling partner we hear in the Broadway pit band. Robert Merrill is Robert Merrill but.

As a score, Kismet managed to sound exotic yet still familiar, and the original Broadway cast performed the songs to perfection, making this an outstanding album. Kismet won six 1954 Tony Awards, including those for best musical, leading actor (Drake), and composer (Borodin, who had been dead for 67 years!). It ran 583 performances on Broadway. This album peaked at number four in the Billboard chart, where it was listed for 23 weeks.
