Best known for singing songs "La Vie En Rose", composed by Louiguy, with lyrics by Piaf, and English lyrics adapted by Mack David; and "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" written by Michel Vaucaire, which rather fittingly she sung just two years before the end of her eventful life. In 1935 Piaf was discovered in the Pigalle area of Paris by nightclub owner Louis Leplée, whose club Le Gerny off the Champs-Élysées was frequented by the upper and lower classes alike.
This is a beautiful collection, not only of her most known songs, but also of other songs which, according to me, are not so well known. Of course, I loved the songs I remembered, and discovered a lot of songs I had never heard before. Some of these, I didn't like so much. And furthermore, I might start liking them the more I listen to the CD. Anyway, it is certainly quite complete and representative of her songs. I recommend it to anyone who loves Piaf.
Hymne à l'amour" is a popular French song originally performed by Édith Piaf. The lyrics were written by Piaf and the music by Marguerite Monnot. Piaf first sang this song at the Cabaret Versailles in New York City on September 14, 1949. It was written to her lover and the love of her life, the French boxer, Marcel Cerdan. On October 28, 1949, Cerdan was killed in a plane crash on his way from Paris to New York to come to see her. She recorded the song on May 2, 1950.
