Since disbanding Grandaddy prior to the band's 2006 swansong Just Like The Fambly Cat, Jason Lytle has decamped to rural Montana, where he recorded this solo debut entirely on his ow. of acoustic guitar, keyboard drones, synth strings and electronic whines that comprises the bulk of Yours Truly, The Commuter. Which is not to say it's not enjoyable: tracks like "Brand New Sun", "Rollin' Home Alone", and the title-track, hymn Lytle's new home with an engaging warmth, while more tragic matters – the loss of his dog, the regret at losing old friends – are treated with a poignant wonder that's quite beguiling.

Frontman Jason Lytle did much of the heavy lifting throughout Grandaddy's career, juggling the roles of frontman, spokesman, and producer while also penning the band's material. He shouldered even more weight with 2006's Just Like the Fambly Cat, effectively finishing the album himself after the band disintegrated during the recording process. As a result, Lytle sounds confident and relaxed during his first "official" solo release, which explores the signature Grandaddy sound while nodding to Lytle's new home in Montana

Yet Yours Truly, The Commuter – former frontman Jason Lytle's debut solo offering - is essentially a Granddaddy album in all but name. The lo-fi vocals of Brand New Sun sound a distant cousin to The Crystal Lake, whilst the queasy keyboards of Birds Encouraged Him are hark back to the adventurousness of Lytle's later work.

Importing his unassuming, wispy tenor, the electronic flourishes he brings to his lonely brand of folk, and a twitchy distrust of both technology and his fellow man, Lytle doesn’t stray far from what his small but devoted fanbase has come to expect. The only thing Miley Cyrus’s critics found more problematic than her appropriation of black culture on her 2013 album Bangerz was the singer’s utter abandonment of hip-hop on 2017’s Younger Now.
