She was born in 1983 into one of the five principal Kora-playing Griot families from West Africa – she is the first female professional kora player to come from a Griot family. She is the granddaughter of the Master Griot of his generation, Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, cousin of the well-known, celebrated Kora player Toumani Diabate as well as the sister of the renowned Diaspora Kora player Tunde Jegede.

Tunde Jegede (born 28 January 1972) is a composer and t in contemporary classical, African and pop music, who was born in England and as a child travelled to Africa to learn the art of the kora. He is a producer-songwriter and has worked across several genres both as a performer (cello, kora, piano and percussion) and producer. He is a master kora player, and specializes in the West African classical music tradition which dates from the period of Sundiata.

Amadu Bansang Jobarteh made it with the help of the music consultant to England, where these recordings were made. While the field-recordings present the westafrican djali in the natural habitat, this recording is important, as Amadu Bansang Jobarteh is a master of the kora and influenced - apart from his wide-spread, very musical family many other musicians in the Gambia and in Senegal.
