Cymbals Eat Guitars have followed Why There Are Mountains, their self-released debut of 1990s indie rock alchemy, with a difficult and likely divisive sophomore LP. Which isn't all that surprising- these things happen when the "next step" involves signing to a label, hiring a venerated producer (John Agnello, who also worked this year with alt-revivalists Male Bonding), turning over half of your personnel, and releasing an 8 1/2-minute song as the "first single. It's become something of a cliché to praise an "album in the mp3 age," and while Lenses Alien certainly isn't intended to be strip-mined for singles, it's meant to be experienced on a remarkably micro level. It's actually more ambitious than the already grand Mountains, but it doesn't manifest in Byzantine song structure or far-flung sonic touches.

Cymbals Eat Guitars : Lenses Alien. Coming off of a debut that was ambitious in its scope and in sound, Cymbals Eat Guitars left open considerable ambiguity as to what its follow-up could entail. The slope (m) remains at zero. Lenses Alien clocks out at 39:13 holding desperately onto their stalwart sounds of turn-of-the-century hard rock mixed with emo vocals. It probably just sounds like I’m especially bitter about a band not living up to their first effort, that I set the expectations too high and formed an attachment to the debut that any follow-up likely could not contend with.

According the an interview with Stereogum, the album’s sound was influenced by Spiritualized, Bedhead and slowcore. In July 2011, the band premiered the first track from the album: Rifle Eyesight (Proper Name) as a free MP3 download. On August 23, 2011, the album was streamed in its entirety on Spin. The album cover was originally a collage that the band did as a homage to an artist the band admired

Consequence of Sound. Cymbals Eat Guitars have succeeded in creating one of the year’s most surprisingly transcendental sophomore albums.
Don't want to fanboy it up (though it's nearly impossible because I love these guys so much) but it also makes me harder on them. The sophomore slump is created by the fans, not the band; its expectations not being met, not usually an outright bad album being written by the artist. whacks toaster with a rock

Notes
The original artwork for the US release was changed just prior to release. A small number of the CD versions on Barsuk with the original artwork (as used on the UK Memphis Industries release) were issued as promos with a mark on the barcode. This is that version, though it doesn't actually say promo anywhere.Gatefold card sleeve with poster-style lyric insert.
