The record was an early British recording in the subgenre dubbed UK garage. The track reached number 7 in the UK chart. It would later re-appear on the Blow Monkeys' first greatest hits album, Choices – The Singles Collection, their highest-charting record, reaching Number 5 in the UK Albums Chart in 1989

Digging Your Scene: The Best of The Blow Monkeys is a double greatest hits album, released on 4 February 2008 by British band The Blow Monkeys. Led by singer, guitarist, piano and keyboard player Dr. Robert, the group formed in the early 1980s and disbanded in 1990. After that, Dr. Robert went on to pursue a solo career. The Blow Monkeys recently reformed, with the aim of touring and releasing a brand new album.

Animal Magic is the second album from the British band The Blow Monkeys, released in 1986 by RCA/Ariola (now BMG). It gave the group their commercial breakthrough after their debut album, Limping for a Generation, had won critical acclaim but had only sold modestly.

The Blow Monkeys’ debut album, 1984’s ‘Limping For A Generation’, was an edgy mix of sinister post-punk, sensual glam rock and dramatic late 60s pop, melding Robert’s teenage obsession with Marc Bolan and T Rex with a love of Australian band the Laughing Clowns, a legacy of his teenage years spent ‘down under’. The track was a blatant tribute to American house music – indeed, it was mixed by two pioneers of Detroit techno, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson – while Mazelle was a star of the Chicago house scene – and yet worked on its own terms.

They split in 1990 and Dr Robert went solo, contributing to Paul Weller’s debut solo album and co-writing material with artists including Dee C Lee, Kym Mazelle and Beth Orton. The Blow Monkeys are now reunited and released their latest studio album Feels Like a New Morning through Cherry Red in April. We caught up with Dr Robert to hear why songwriting is like casting spells and to find out what he’s learned from more than 30 years in the business. When did you first get into writing songs? Pretty much when I first got into playing guitar, around age 14, mainly because I couldn’t play anyone.
