Aldous Harding’s third album, Designer is released on 26th April and finds the New Zealander hitting her creative stride. After the sleeper success of Party (internationally lauded and crowned Rough Trade Shop’s Album of 2017), Harding came off a 200-date tour last summer and went straight into the studio with a collection of songs written on the road. Reuniting with John Parish, producer of Party, Harding spent 15 days recording and 10 days mixing at Rockfield Studios, Monmouth and Bristol’s J&J Studio and Playpen.

A singular talent, Harding seems to have hit her stride on album number three, and while the darkness of previous efforts is still pervasive, Designer feels like a summer record, though it's probably best suited for dusk.

Designer is an album of elegant contemplation, of confidence, doubt and longing, and as a result is Harding’s most assured album yet, taking a direct approach to its own arresting strangeness and making room for everyone within its singular and expansive shape.

Hannah Harding (born 1990), known professionally as Aldous Harding, is a New Zealand folk singer-songwriter. She has been represented by independent record labels Flying Nun Records and Spunk Records. 4AD announced Harding as a new signing in early 2017 just prior to the release of her second album.

With Aldous Harding, there are no easy answers. Since releasing her self-titled debut in 2014, the New Zealand singer-songwriter has dodged those who would try to put a finger on her elusive appeal. Critics tend to describe her work as gothic folk -a label that misses the idiosyncrasies of her ambitious, largely acoustic songs, muting their pockets of color. It could be said that her third album, Designer, operates somewhere in the intersection of all three. Close reading of Harding’s songs is, to some extent, a futile exercise; the artist has admitted that sometimes their significance escapes even her. But that very fact-paradoxically, maybe-makes the act of untangling them all the more vital. They are a bit like pages in a coloring book: Harding sketches out motifs and delineates contours, but the ultimate effect depends on whichever shades happen to be handy on your personal palette.

Designer ‎(LP, Album). The album is really excellent, but the pressing (MPO) isn't at all : listen to side A, tracks 2, 3 and 4 - a lot of distortions and parasite noises affect the sound, especially on quiet moments. The problem is the same on both gold and black copies.
