Quicksilver is the sixth album by American psychedelic rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service. Released in November 1971, it was the first album without original members John Cipollina and David Freiberg. Nicky Hopkins had also left at this point to continue his successful journeyman career. Only Gary Duncan and Greg Elmore remained from the original quartet.

The most apparent change in Quicksilver Messenger Service's sound can be directly attributed to the return of Valenti. The group has departed the long, free-flowing improvisations that prevailed on both their self-titled debut and follow-up, Happy Trails. The songs are now shorter and more notably structured, with an added emphasis on Valenti's compositions. The title track, "What About Me," became an ethical and sociological anthem with challenging and direct lyrical references to the political and social instability of the early '70s.

Quicksilver Messenger Service is the debut studio album of Quicksilver Messenger Service, released in 1968. This was Quicksilver Messenger Service's first album, although they had already produced two songs for the soundtrack of the 1968 movie Revolution. The album displays the group's jam sound amidst lighter pop-oriented songs.

The debut album by Quicksilver Messenger Service, I suppose, didn't exactly prove the world that there really was a necessity for such a band on our planet in the light of the existence of bands like the Byrds and, of course, Jefferson Airplane. They seemed to play typical hippie-dippie music, but with no distinguishable edge. For reasons I wouldn't know about Cipollina, Freiberg, and Hopkins had all jumped ship after What About Me - freeing the band of two crucial founding members and one crucial latecomer. Maybe they just looked at the calendar, said to themselves, "Hey, what are we doing still playing in an acid rock band in this Led Zeppelin age?", and took off.

Orhan Terzi (born 28 June 1964), better known by his stage name DJ Quicksilver, is a German-Turkish DJ and music producer. His stage name derives from his days taking part in DJ contests, where a mercury column would gauge audience reaction. Terzi was born on 28 June 1964 in Trabzon, Turkey. His family moved to Hattingen, Germany in the late 1960s.

Quicksilver’s initial and long-awaited excursion into the primordial clear light of San Francisco isn’t quite what was expected, due to the production staff headed by the Electric Flag’s Nick Gravenites and Harvey Brooks. The Quicksilver Messenger Service don’t sound quite the same since they’ve heard the Flag and Mike Bloomfield, late arrivals on the San Francisco scene. As a result, most of the album cuts (only six altogether) come across sounding like the Electric Flag, minus their blues-loyal predication and Buddy Miles, doing straight rock

Duncan temporarily dropped out of the band that same year and did not appear on the third album, Shady Grove, which featured the newly added British pianist Nicky Hopkins. By 1970, not only had Duncan returned, but so too did Dino Valenti, who took over the band’s lead vocal spot for the albums Just For Love, What About Me (both 1970), Quicksilver (1971, with Freiberg, Cipollina and Hopkins now out) and Comin’ Thru (1972). The group split that year, then reunited for Solid Silver in 1975, with Duncan, Cipollina, Freiberg, Elmore and Valenti on board.
