Caribou – Swim (2010). It is difficult to classify Dan Snaith’s newest album, Swim, as either a step forward or backwards from its widely acclaimed predecessor, Andorra. Whereas that basked in gorgeous ’60 pop with technological additives, Swim takes a more direct approach in its use of electronics. The album’s name alone, Swim, derives from Snaith’s desire to give his songs a sort of flexible flow not often characteristic in dance music
Caribou (aka Dundas, Ontario's Dan Snaith) has made a habit of reinventing himself on pretty much every album without ever losing sight of his own identity. This gives Swim a feel of abstraction that doesn't let the album gel together, despite its similar sound and aesthetic throughout. This is a good thing: Swim is the kind of minimalist record that could go gravely wrong if handled inappropriately; without enough flair, it could've been sort of a drag (for example, there's "Bowls", which is the one song on the album that drags its feet)
