The Relatively Clean Rivers album stands with the very best albums of the era, possessing a purely American sound and walking confidently past the shadow of its previous incarnation. Amazingly well produced for a private pressing, it is the very antithesis of his earlier releases that could be classified as garage (at a stretch. Relatively Clean Rivers. 80 BPM. Relatively Clean Rivers ‎(LP, Album, RE, Unofficial, 180). Phoenix Records (2). ASHLP3007. A tremendous mid-1970's rural psych album that sounds like it was recorded in late 1968, Relatively Clean Rivers has that hippie commune Springfield/Manson Family/Dead vibe down pat. Although most often compared to The Dead, only the record's first cut, "Easy Ride" really sounds much like them, with it's acoustic/electric guitar mix and American Beauty era vocal styles. It's a great song, but the rest of the album is much different and a little bit better, spewing out wasted Topanga Canyon folkpsych with wacked out commune lyrics.

If anything, four decades of sleuthing has only contributed to the legend. As it turns out, Relatively Clean Rivers is the pet sound of Phil Pearlman, an Orange County native who grew to prominence jamming psychedelic improvisations with both The Beat of the Earth (1967) and Electronic Hole (1970).

Relatively Clean Rivers' self-titled album is one such rarity, with an easygoing California c feel in which light-to-strong traces of Neil Young, the countrified Grateful Dead, and Quicksilver Messenger Service can be heard. It's different than the vast majority of such LPs, however, in that it's actually a fairly good collection of tunes with some decent songwriting and strong, professional playing and harmonizing. There's some variety to the proceedings (and from the general c prototype) too, with some extended instrumental acoustic passages and a Middle Eastern influenced number, "The Persian Caravan," that recalls exotic early Country Joe & the Fish psychedelic excursions like "Section 4.

what's the true likelihood of this LP ever getting a proper reissue? I'm sure Phil Pearlman is tacitly aware that there's been a growing, renewed interest in his work over the years...

2016 re-issue still available for $22 bones on 180 gram vinyl and comprehensively remastered using the latest 48-bit technology on Phoenix Records!

Bootlegged from an original LP which was pressed off-center, ripped with bad equipment, and compressed/limited. No amount of bits will save you from bad mastering.
