John Ireland's string quartets are very early works, both composed in 1897, when the composer was just 18 and a student at the Royal College of Music. He wrote the First Quartet in a desperate attempt to impress Charles Stanford and get himself taken on as one of the great man's pupils

John Ireland was just 14 when he entered London’s Royal College of Music to study piano with Frederick Cliffe. Two years later, the precocious teenager became the youngest person to rise to the rank of Fellow of the Royal College of Organists.
