Exclusive Prime pricing. Tchaikovsky: String Quartets Nos. 1 & 3. "Please retry". Arguably, Tchaikovsky's best work of chamber music is the E-Flat Quartet that follows. Some shaky intonation from Oliver Heath is not the only contributing factor to this effort being almost completely unrepresentative of what this piece has to offer. Once into the faster section of the first movement, with the distinctive colors and harmonic relationships Tchaikovsky invites us to explore, these players are almost completely glib.

In the end, he left us five. Three are from the 1940s, and are powered by the kind of ticking energy and radiant, sunlit sonorities that characterise other early works such as the Concerto for Double String Orchestra. The fourth, however, did not follow for three decades; the fifth, completed in 1991, would be the 86-year-old Tippett’s penultimate work. The five together thus form a skewed but rewarding survey of the composer’s life

The Lindsay Quartet have set a high standard of Tippett interpretation, with that special authority that stems from working on the music with the composer. Whatever else Tippett has done, he has not inhibited these players: their performances are characterized by a distinctive freshness and spontaneity, a well-balanced homogeneity of texture and a fine sense of rhythmic flow, essential if the music is not to coagulate around its multitude of contrapuntal details. To this extent my response to the Britten Quartet recordings echoes my feelings about their recordings of Britten's Second and Third Quartets (12/90). The sound is similar too: spacious, but of analytical brightness. The Lindsay have a more natural ambience, and this fits the spirit of their playing to perfection.
