Tangier was a popular Philadelphia-based American rock band active in the late 1980s and early 90s. Tangier formed in Philadelphia by songwriter and guitarist Doug Gordon and grew up in the clubs with bands such as Cinderella, who would later help the group out by having Tangier open for them on their second major tour.

Sartori in Tangier" derives its title from Satori in Paris and the city of Tangier in Morocco, where a number of Beat writers resided and which they often used as a setting for their writing. Writer Paul Bowles was associated with the Beats, and his novel The Sheltering Sky, which provided the title for a track on King Crimson's previous studio album, Discipline, is partly set in Tangier. Bowles's novel is further references on the King Crimson song "Walking On Air", from their 1995 album Thrak

Tangier Sessions, Bishop’s latest album of solo guitar music, was recorded in just a week during a short visit to the Moroccan city. Like much of his output both alone and with the Girls, it’s largely improvised. Bishop circles around and tries out instantiations of a melodic phrase before committing to one, seemingly debating where to move in real time. Stylistically, the album evokes Morocco as a hub of cultural exchange.
