This band reflects a tiny but fascinating and oft-forgotten scene of South African progressive rock, regularly omitted from prog annals and denied their part in music history. But in their time, Freedom’s Children were no less innovative than Atomic Rooster, Egg or Colosseum and their 1970 release Astra was an extremely important if completely missed record. Luckily it was re-issued in 1990 and again several times.

Galactic Vibes is really good. As a matter of fact, the guitar solos and the songwriting are both much better than I went in expecting. The Homecoming" has a guitar jam that reminds me of Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac fame, and it's spectacular. On their previous album Astra, Freedom's Children set an incredibly high standard in psychedelic rock that would be hard to beat. This, their third album, came very close though. There is a live 16 minute track that some may find too long, although the song The Homecoming, which is actually from the Astra album, is one of their best. If you like progressive or psychedelic rock then the first 3 albums from this band are must-haves. The good thing about this reissue is that the 9 bonus tracks are almost the complete first album, so it's kind of like a double album.
