Kool and the Gang released Something Special in 1981 after scoring two back to back Platinum albums and 3 Top 10 hits. Previous years Celebration became somewhat of an anthem. The album closes with No Show, another killer slow gem that further highlights Kool and the Gang’s versatility and Taylor’s talent as a vocalist. Why No Show was not released and promoted as a single is a mystery since it is a perennial Quiet Storm classic that never was. Big Thanks to Big Break Records for re-mastering Something Special. As is customary with any BBR re-master, the sound is crisp, the liner notes are informative and there are 7 Bonus tracks here
The third single from the album was "Get Down on I. As the title indicates, this is a gritty funk track that worked its way up the charts to claim the number three position, selling more than 500,000 copies. Although there were no more charted singles from this album, the entire collection is deserving of recognition. On a slower note, "Pass It On" and "No Show" received regional airplay. With their long track record, Kool & the Gang have always offered dance-provoking rhythms and Something Special fits that bill, too. Featuring the number one single "Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It)," James ". Taylor approaches the song in a cool, mesmerizing tone, closing out the vamp in his falsetto with a burst of energy while the background vocals chant the subtitle throughout the chorus.

Taylor's silky voice and several catchy arrangements, R&B fans regard their true glory days as the 1970s. The New Jersey-based ensemble patented a jazz-tinged funk approach keyed by Robert "Kool" Bell's basslines, red-hot horn lines, chunky keyboards and guitar riffs, and functional vocals. Although they seldom ventured beyond the R&B charts during this era, their music had far more bite than their later pop hits.
