The Dream Academy is the debut studio album by English band The Dream Academy, released in November 1985. It was mainly produced by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Nick Laird-Clowes. The most notable track from the album is "Life in a Northern Town", which was written as a tribute to Nick Drake. It also proved to be their only major chart success, reaching number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 15 in the UK.
Remembrance Days is the second album by the British band The Dream Academy. Not as successful as the band's 1985 self-titled debut, the album peaked at number 181 in the United States. The lyrics and music for "The Lesson of Love" was written in just two four-hour sessions at Patrick Leonard's home. Nick was inspired to write "In Exile" after reading an article in The Village Voice on Rodrigo Rojas.
The Dream Academy was the self-titled debut release for the art-school trio led by lead singer/guitarist Nick Laird-Clowes. Produced by David Gilmour and Laird-Clowes, the group was rounded out by umentalist Kate St. John and keyboard player Gilbert Gabriel, and they struck the first time out with the album's standout track, "Life in a Northern Town," which became a Top Ten smash in the spring of 1986. The Dream Academy used lush string arrangements and choir-like background vocals to create a sumptuous backdrop for their paisley-tinged pop. It works to best. Laird-Clowes' vocals are thin, a shortcoming masked by the soft focus of the material, and the album falters a bit during the second half; however, the best material on this record leaves you longing for more.
Album · 1984 · 10 Songs. Best known for the 1985 single Life in a Northern Town (a tribute to Nick Drake, then mostly unknown), The Dream Academy recorded a magical self-titled album that remains among the finest of the '80s. Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour assisted band leader Nick Laird-Clowes with the production, which expanded the sound of the British art-school trio beyond all imagination, featuring orchestrations, choir-like backing vocals, and modern synths to create ‘80s-styled psychedelic pop music, much in the vein of Prefab Sprout.
