Divertimenti, KV 138 & KV 287. Wolfgang Mozart. This album, recorded in 1984 by the Academy Chamber Ensemble, is your best choice to hear this underrated masterpiece in its original instrumentation and complete heavenly length. Divertimenti have not fared too well over the centuries as a musical genre; indeed there are not too many noteworthy comparisons written after this shining example. Straddling the dividing lines between chamber music, concerti, and society music, divertimenti were written to be played in the background of an "official" (read: royal) event. Mozart's D major was written in 1780 for a Salzburg University.
