Here the Gaudier Ensemble play two Salzburg divertimenti, No 10 in F and No 17 in D, as sextets - two violins, viola, double bass and two horns - as precursors of Beethoven’s strings-and-wind Septet and Schubert’s great Octet. Mozart intended them as occasional pieces - the F major to celebrate the name day of Countess Antonia Lodron, the sister of his Salzburg employer, Archbishop Colloredo; the D major possibly as a graduation present for a scion of the Robinig von Rottenfeld family - but they are conceived on a grand scale.
