The Deep End, Volume 1 is the fourth studio album by American rock band Gov't Mule. The album was released on October 23, 2001, by ATO Records and Evangeline Records. After the death of founding member and bass guitarist Allen Woody, the band considered breaking up. Instead, remaining members Warren Haynes and Matt Abts recorded several songs with bass players Woody had admired. So many musicians wanted to participate that the band ended up recording two albums worth of material
The Deep End, Volume 2 is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Gov't Mule. The album was released on October 8, 2002, by ATO Records. After the death of founding member and bass guitarist Allen Woody, the band began recording tracks using bass players that Woody had admired. Originally, there was to be one disc, but so many musicians wanted to be part of the sessions that over 160 minutes of music was recorded. At this point, the remaining members Warren Haynes and Matt Abts decided to split the project into two releases

Volume One was released November 2001 and its companion volume has just now seen release through Dave Matthews ATO imprint. The album finds a dozen different bassists contributing, along with an assortment of backing players, making this a whos who of rock history. The big names this time around include Jason Newsted, Les Claypool, Yess Chris Squire, Me'Shell NdegéOcello and a bevy of more obscure players. The albums stylistic breadth highlights Govt Mules versatility, past and present, including their current revolving door touring bassist arrangement. The first pressing of The Deep End, Volume 2 offers a CD-Rom documentary on hardworking Haynes and his three current bands (the Allman Brothers, Govt Mule and Phil Leshs quintet). Also recommended is the project documentary DVD The Rising Low, done by another bassist, Mike Gordon of Phish.
In 2003, after recording The Deep End, Volume 1 (2001) and Volume 2 (2002), Gov't Mule gathered several musicians that had worked on the Deep End sessions as well as a few other friends for a live concert. This was intended as the culmination of the Deep End project, which was a tribute to their late bassist Allen Woody, who died in 2000. The release also marked the first Gov't Mule CD to feature keyboardist Danny Louis as a full-time member. This album is one of the 10 best "live jam releases of this century" according to the August 2006 issue of Guitar One magazine.
