Gang Gang Dance borrow from the sprawling musical tradition of bands like Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead, and the Orb in that their music seems to drift into existence. Fusing together different styles the way they do-and on Kazuashita you can hear everything from techno to prog to reggae, frequently within the same two-minute stretch-can be a tricky business. But Gang Gang Dance make it sound effortless, as if they scratched up these moments of delight in an early-morning jam session before settling down to breakfast. When the band’s fluffily melodic approach fails, as on the promising (but ultimately dull) title track or the Sigur Rós-lite album closer Salve on the Sorrow, Kazuashita ends up saccharine and pompous, like music designed to soundtrack bad wildlife documentaries. Thankfully, these missteps are rare on an album that proves Gang Gang Dance aren’t so much of the moment as of a different moment, an alternative and rather more pleasant one. You could call their glass approach unrealistic. But Gang Gang Dance show that sometimes unreality is a great place to be.

Brooklyn experimental band Gang Gang Dance have returned after a long hiatus with the new album Kazuashita due this spring on 4AD. Today you can hear the first single ‘Lotus’. Kazuashita reunites original members Lizzi Bougatsos, Brian DeGraw and Josh Diamond and features drummer Ryan Sawyer, as well as production from Jorge Elbrecht. It marks Gang Gang Dance’s first full-length since their 2011 album Eye Contact. Their album before that, 2008’s St. Dymphna, was one of our top 10 albums of the decade. As Gang Gang Dance explore heavy issues and deep concepts with a light touch and effortless flow, they sound more emotionally engaged, and nuanced, than ever. While they expand on the calmer moments that took a back seat on their previous albums, Gang Gang Dance don't trade invention for serenity on Kazuashita. Some of the band's finest music yet, to say that Kazuashita was worth the wait is an understatement; it's a timely, necessary expression of hope that also feels like a union of the new and the eternal.
