Gary Hoey (born August 23, 1960) is an American hard rock and latterly blues rock guitarist, singer and songwriter. He has recorded over 20 albums and had five Top 20 Billboard hits. Hoey was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, United States. At fourteen, Hoey often lingered outside Boston's renowned Berklee College of Music, making friends and offering to pay for lessons.
Album Name Bug Alley. 3. Black Magic Woman. 7. Gotta Serve Somebody.
Gary Hoey is back with Monster Surf. Hoey is the guitar God whose knack for taking well-known songs an turning them into rock instrumental monsters has made him a rock radio icon. The album throws us into a Robert Johnson-esque song with a modern twist of course, called Boxcar Blues. This train of a track hits all the stops. Chugging right along we strut our way into Who’s Your Daddy.
Bug Alley is another showcase for Gary Hoey's exceptional instrumental skills, but it falls short of being the crossover breakthrough he is capable of. Part of the problem is Hoey is more interested in playing guitar than recording an album. He hauls out classic rock chestnuts like "Black Magic Woman" and "Gotta Serve Somebody," "reinterpreting" them by making them blues-rock and hard-rock guitar workouts.
Album: Bug Alley, 1998. Gary Hoey awed the crowd at the 2017 Dallas International Guitar Show! Gary Hoey (Guitar and Vocals), AJ Pappas (Bass), Matt Scurfield (drums). Gary Hoey -. When talking about hidden musical jewels in today’s rock and blues scenes, we would be remiss if we neglected to bring Gary Hoey into the discussion. This incredibly talented guitar player from Boston has over 20 albums in a career spanning almost 30-years during which time he has explored virtually every musical possibility within the rock and roll genre, going from hard rock to blues and even progressive rock.
Gary Hoey - Guitar, Vocals. Tony Franklin - Bass. Gregg Bissonette - Drums. Brian Setzer (Special guest guitarist on Bug Alley ). The album was recorded in Lake Havasu, AZ in 120 degree weather. The sun visor on my car melted one day in the scorching heat. The title Bug Alley was the name of an auto repair garage where I rented a room to write the album. It’s also where I first hung with Brian Setzer.
