Sunday at the Village Vanguard is a live album by jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans and his Trio consisting of Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian. Released in 1961, the album is routinely ranked as one of the best live jazz recordings of all time. Sunday at the Village Vanguard was drawn from material recorded during five sets on June 25, 1961 at the Village Vanguard in New York City

Live At The Village Vanguard Again! is a jazz album by saxophonist John Coltrane. Recorded in May 1966, the album shows Coltrane playing in the free jazz style that characterized his last years. The line up consists of the augmented quartet of the time, featuring Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Rashied Ali on drums.

Sunday at the Village Vanguard is the initial volume of a mammoth recording session by the Bill Evans Trio, from June 25, 1961 at New York's Village Vanguard documenting Evans' first trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. Its companion volume is Waltz for Debby. This trio is still widely regarded as his finest, largely because of the symbiotic interplay between its members. Tragically, LaFaro was killed in an automobile accident ten days after this session was recorded, and Evans assembled the two packages a few months afterward. According to Motian, when Evans built this trio based on live gigs at the Basin Street East, the intention was always to develop a complete interactive trio experience. At the time, this was an unheard of notion, since piano trios were largely designed to showcase the prowess of the front line soloist with rhythmic accompaniment.

At The Village Vanguard. At The Village Vanguard. When making my selection I spent some time trying to determine the difference between "At the Village Vanguard" and "Sunday at the Village Vanguard". It turns out that this album ("At the Village Vanguard") is a compilation released much later by Riverside containing 10 of the 13 tunes from "Sunday at the Village . and "Waltz for Debby", but without all of the alternate takes. For me it is the perfect choice of a good selection from this historic recording session.

Alto saxophonist Steve Coleman’s Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol. I (The Embedded Sets) is his first live release in over 15 years.

The great pianist Bill Evans’ ‘The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961,’ widely seen by jazz devotees as one of the greatest live sessions in the genre’s history, will be reissued on vinyl in November by Concord Music Group as a four-LP, 180-gram vinyl box set. The new presentation of the landmark, 53-year-old recording, at the famed New York club the Village Vanguard, will come with a 12-page booklet that includes new liner notes by the reissue producer Bill Belmont, alongside the original notes by the 1961 producer, Orrin Keepnews. Waltz For Debby’ and ‘Sunday At The Village Vanguard’ both featured his trio, with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums. Says Belmont of the reissue procedure: As was the practice with early live recording, the songs were faded just after the last note, and much, if not all, of the audience and banter from the stage was removed.
