Psychedelic Unknowns (LP, Album, Comp, Mono, Bla). Fine selection of prime US teen garage punk psychedelia compiling the first two 'Billy Synth Presents The Psychedelic Unknowns' double 7" EPs on Calico. They left 2 tracks from vol. 2 off this LP though - The Higher Elevation's The Diamond Mine (no great loss - think Kim Fowley's The Trip and you've got it). and Yesterday's Children's To Be Or Not To Be.
Often regarded as Spirit’s finest album, it’s here that Randy California gives full vent to his inner fears of life’s drift. Encouraged by producer David Briggs, his guitar performances are both virtuoso yet also emotionally entangled. Probably nonsense, but it would have been appropriate if he eventually found some peace through his own masterpiece. In 1968, The Moodies immersed themselves totally in the psychedelic waters. After their breakthrough the previous year with Days Of Future Passed, this time they took a real swing into the challenging and timely vibe of the whole pysch process. There was mysticism here, glowing alongside philosophical mantras built on the twin treatises of drugs and alternative lifestyles.
An album with a theme, Marijuana Unknowns features obscure bands from the sixties toting tunes referencing the heady herb. Subject aside, which is not nearly as shocking or rebellious as it was when these tracks were conceived, this is a really great collection of songs as it examines an array of musical moods and measures. sleepy-eyed pitch that cops the trippy instrumentation of Strawberry Fields towards the end of the cut. Other grand gems heard on Marijuana Unknowns are Owen B’s Zig Zag Man, which races around and around to a hard driving exposition of zig zagging melodies, and the Zombies meet the Monkees atmospheric pop rock of Mary Mary from the Birdwatchers.

Notes
Early 80s repress.Psychedelic Unknowns - 20 Obscure tracks recorded in the first age of psychedelia and brought together in 1979 on 2 limited edition E.P.'s released only in the USA. Now they are together for the first time, ever, on THIS L.P. and released in England where there seems to be a Psychedelic Revival!?!
As you browse across the tracks I hope you will not be put off simply becouse the names are unfamiliar. This record is not intended as a "Greatest Hits". What you will find is a collection of 20 "Mind Blowing Experiences" gathered from every part of the USA where they were just "Gathering Dust!". When the tracks were originally released on local independent labels, sales were propably less than 1.000 copies. Now 15 years later Calico Records are hoping that the music will generate much larger sales - not for the money - but that we may be able to finance further excursions in the world of Psychedelia. At the moment the answer to that is... UNKNOWN. ℗ 1979
