Rautavaara wrote a great number of works spanning various styles. These include eight symphonies, nine operas and twelve concertos, as well as numerous vocal and chamber works. Having written early works using 12-tone serial techniques, his later music may be described as neo-romantic and mystical His opera Thomas (1985) marked the beginning of his mature operatic style, combining neo-romantic harmonies with aleatoric counterpoint, twelve-tone rows and different modal systems.

The Angel idea originates in a series of works (Angels and Visitations and Angel of Dusk, for instance), the reference being to 'an archetype, one of mankind's oldest traditions and perennial companions'. This release of the "best of" Einojuhani Rautavaara from the Finnish label Ondine consists of movements from larger works, as well as the complete Cantus arcticus, one of the composer's most performed works. Having neglected Rautavaara's music for some time, this disc provided me with a guided introduction to the composer's oeuvre. However, now that I've been won over to his music, I wish that I had just bought a whole album

The Seventh Symphony, subtitled Angel of Light, is less original: it is harmonically bland, its debts to Sibelius and Shostakovich too marked. The performances, from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Hannu Koivula, are excellent, while the recording is engineered over a suitably massive dynamic range.
