The Concert for Bangladesh (or Bangla Desh, as the country's name was originally spelt) was a pair of benefit concerts organised by former Beatles lead guitarist George Harrison and Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar. The concerts were held at 2:30 and 8:00 pm on Sunday, 1 August 1971, at Madison Square Garden in New York City

Joe from New York, NyI actually met George Harrison a few days after The Concert For Bangle Desh in August of 1971. That was at the Gramarcy Park Hotel on 23rd street and Lexington avenue in Manhattan,NYC. Leon Russell was "dating" my sister Boe and we 3 were staying at the hotel when one Saturday afternoon Leon asked Boe and I to please go out for a few hours so that he may have a meeting with George Harrison in the hotel room. So we agreed and off we walked BUT made sure NOT.

Yet Harrison is in confident command, running through highlights from his recent triumphant All Things Must Pass album in fine voice, secure enough to revisit his Beatles legacy from Abbey Road and the White Album. Though overlooked at the time by impatient rock fans eager to hear the hits, Shankar's opening raga, "Bangla Dhun," is a masterwork on its own terms; the sitar virtuoso is in dazzling form even by his standards and, in retrospect, Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Alla Rakha amount to an Indian supergroup themselves.

The Concert for Bangladesh is a film directed by Saul Swimmer and released in 1972. The film documents the two benefit concerts that were organised by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar to raise funds for refugees of the Bangladesh Liberation War, and were held on Sunday, 1 August 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
