Equally compelling are Green Thoughts' curveballs, like the countryish "Something New," the lovely ballad "Especially for You," and the dark, atmospheric "Deep Black," all of which deliver intriguing variations on the Smithereens' basic power pop formula.

11 is the third full-length album by The Smithereens, released on October 18, 1989 (see 1989 in music). It includes the Billboard Top 40 single "A Girl Like You". The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in June 1990. The album title was inspired by the film Ocean's 11, "with a little push from Spinal Tap's famous line, "This one goes to 11", according to guitarist Jim Babjak.

Green Thoughts is THE quintessential Smithereens album. Everything that makes the Smithereens great is here in abundance - guitars jangle buzz and chime, vocals burst in harmonies, and drums plonk, whack and boom groovily. Green Thoughts is The Smithereen's second LP, and it's clearly amazing and defining of the alternative rock scene of the 80's. Like "Especially For You", the album really shines on its songwriting and cohesiveness. Pat DiNizio continues to tell us every sad story about love, so it's definitely for those who are heartbroken and pensive. However, many of the songs are very catchy, and it's a good album to leave on regardless of the mood.
